How do I price my 3D prints for Etsy?
Start from true cost, not filament cost. A print’s real cost is material including waste and failed prints, electricity, a slice of your printer’s purchase price (depreciation), maintenance consumables, your hands-on time, post-processing, packaging and shipping. Then Etsy takes its stack — listing fee, transaction fee on the item and shipping, payment processing, and possibly Offsite Ads. Work backwards from a target margin on top of all of that. That’s exactly what the calculator above does.
Why include printer depreciation? My printer is already paid for.
Because it wears out. Nozzles, belts, beds, motors — a printer has a finite number of good print-hours, and every hour of printing consumes one of them. If you don’t price that in, the money to replace the machine comes out of your “profit.” Divide the printer’s price by its realistic lifetime print-hours and charge each print its share. For consumer FDM machines this lands around $0.08–0.20 per print-hour including maintenance consumables — real, but far below the “$20/hour machine time” folklore. The presets here sit inside that community-consensus band, and every number is editable.
What failure rate should I use?
Be honest, not optimistic. A dialed-in farm running proven profiles might see a few percent. A typical seller mixing new models and materials sees more. Every failed print consumed material, power and machine life — the successful ones must pay for it, which is why the calculator loads machine-side costs by your failure rate.
How accurate is the STL estimate?
It computes your model’s exact solid volume, then estimates printed weight from your material’s density, typical wall share and your infill setting. It’s a ballpark for when you haven’t sliced yet — your slicer’s number is always better, and the estimate tells you so rather than pretending to be exact. The file never leaves your device; it’s analyzed in your browser.
Should I charge for my time? Printing is passive.
The printing is passive; the business isn’t. Slicing, plate prep, removal, support cleanup, quality checks, packing, customer messages — that’s real labor per unit. If you wouldn’t do those steps for a stranger for free, don’t do them for your customers for free.
Is this calculator really free? Where does my data go?
The calculator is free and runs in your browser — your numbers are stored on your device (localStorage) and never uploaded, and unlocking Pro is checked locally too. Pro is a one-time purchase that unlocks unlimited saved products and CSV export.
Are the marketplace fees up to date?
Fee tables are maintained by hand against each marketplace’s published seller-fee schedule (US rates; the version, date and sources are in the footer). Click any channel row to see its exact fee lines and source. Optional programs like Etsy Offsite Ads are toggleable above. Fees differ by country — sellers outside the US should treat the comparisons as approximate.
